As part of American Education Week, students at Hickok school took part in the retirement of colors after the school day followed by the launch of hundreds of balloons into the afternoon sky.

Kate Wooldridge was named Student of the Month at Kepley school. She is the daughter of Sonja and Brad Wooldridge and has one sister, Kelli and one brother, Wes. Kate enjoys sports and plays basketball and volleyball. She carries a 4.0 grade point average and wants to be a physical therapist.

Senior John Hastert led the list of award recipients for this year’s Tiger Football team. He was recognized for his 1,000 yard rushing year, Offensive Player of the Year, Most Valuable Offensive Player and Outstanding Special Teams Player. Russ Ballard was named Defensive Player of the Year.

Ulysses High School announced the honor roll for the first nine Weeks. Seven seniors earned a perfect 3.0 average. They were David Floyd, Diana Karber, Chris Martin, Duane McGuire, Melanie Schmidt, Shirley Smith and Brenda Walkemeyer. A total of 139 students made the honor roll.

Norman and Louise Carpenter have moved to Ulysses and opened the Stylette Beauty Salon at 214 N. Main Street. Mr. and Mrs. Carpenter and their sons, Don and Rusty, say they like the town very much and are looking forward to meeting and serving the people.

Oliver Spencer, former high school football star at Ulysses and now playing with the University of Kansas team, was nominated last Week by the board of selectors for the AP All-American team. He was named as an offensive tackle by the Associated Press.

A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Finch on Friday at a Garden City hospital. She weighed five pounds, 13 ounces, and was named Teresa LaRae.

(Week of November 19, 1931)

The high school play given at the Ulysses Theatre on Thursday night was well-attended and enjoyed by those present. The play “Mr. Bob” was a comedy drama and the school realized a nice sum from the proceeds. They wish to thank the patrons for their attendance and assistance.

In District 39 news: Two threshing rigs are in our vicinity. One is threshing for the Hamptons and the other was at John Yohn’s. The weather has been pretty cool this Week and bunches of wild geese going south make us think that winter is almost here.
