Stephanie Koop, an eighth grader at Kepley Middle School, was named winner of the Grant County Spelling Bee February 12. Aasha Brown, (eighth grade) earned second place and eighth grader Skylar Morales was awarded third place. Clayt Noriega (seventh) and Sarah Wiebe (fifth grade) tied for fourth place

The former Monsanto plant just north of Ulysses was purchased by West Industries, LLC. A new produce packing/storage facility was to open after remodeling is completed

It was announced that Southwest Bank would become Western State Bank at the end of March.

Wrestlers who qualified for state competition were: Wade Walker, Ben Chatham, T.C. Heckman, Marcus Jauregui, Esteban Gallegos and Britt Madison.

Two elementary teams composed of resource class students from Sullivan and Hickok schools competed at the Odyssey of the Mind regional competition in Garden City on Saturday, February 13, 1993. Competing in the dinosaurs and structure building problem, the teams earned first place rankings and the opportunity to compete in the state competition at Wichita in March.

Bee swarm was really a gas leak. A noise described by one North Valley View inhabitant asa "swarm of bees, not the domestic kind, but a little larger. Say about the size of 747s" jarred the Valley View populace away from menial affairs into wakefulness last Tuesday when a four-inch Panhandle-Eastern line north of the SantaFe Railroad track allowed gas to escape through what officials termed a three-inch blow off.

Dr. Paul Tudder, an obstetrician and gynecologist, and chief resident at George Washington University in Washington D.C. recently spent a week in Ulysses conferring with members of the medical community.

Shirley Calvin, a 1982 graduate of Washburn University Law School, embarked on a new career February 15, as an associate in the firm of Hathaway and Kimball in Ulysses.

A 50,000 capacity feedlot was to be built 11miles southwest of Ulysses, by International Cattle Systems. .

Ulysses Lumber company has moved into its new storage room built on the west of the store. It's business offices were to be moved to the north of the store.

Cal-Zona head lettuce was expected to center in Ulysses. The company was needing 700 acres or more.

J.A. Wheeler, of Sedan, Kans., was soon to begin his work as pastor at the Shelton Memorial Christian Church in Ulysses.

The 1953 Grant County March of Dimes campaign came to a close with total contributions of $1,301.98.

The Church of God will open a series of meetings Sunday, with the Rev. S.J. Lane of Pryor, Okla., in charge.

Registration for war bonds was to end Saturday.

Charlie Walker followed a hunch last Monday and it proved to be correct resulting in the capture of two alleged bootleggers who destroyed practically all of the evidence, claiming they were destroying antifreeze.

In spite of the usual dust storm Saturday there were 212 people who had registered at the Grant County Crops Carnival.
