Eleven Ulysses residents were among the more than 4,000 students awarded $1,000 in scholarships from Kansas State University for the 2002-2003 school year. Ulysses residents who received scholarships were: Kelsey Tenielle Anderson, Sarah Jo Carpenter, Laura Kay Dalke, Allen Carl Egley, Jessica Denee Henson, Megan Nicole Henson, Melissa M. Long, Nicholas Michael Long, April Dawn Teeter, Joshua Michael Ybarra and Nicole Dawn Young.

The first semester cheerleaders for Kepley school who gathered canned goods for Loaves and Fishes were Gina Kinkaid, Abbey Gindlesberger, Laura Messenger, Angie Griffin, Jamie Doerschlag, Sonia Bencomo, Jay Lynn Chadd, Linda Sandoval,Trisha Harms, Dana Fenner, and Amber Hapton. Sponsors were Amy Cavasos and Gina Cavasos.

No arrests had been made to date on the theft of a calf from the Terry Walker farm over a Week ago, but leads were still being followed, Sheriff Darrll Pflughoft reported. Walker reported finding the calf's intestines in a field. It had been killed, dragged down the road, gutted and removed from the scene, according to Pflughoft.

Candy Strippers capped in a ceremony included Margie Rouse, Cheryl Schwartzkopf, Cynthia Scott, Colleen Sullivan, Mavina Wilson, Cindy Hampton, Yvonne Koehn, Ladonna Koehn, Pam Rogers, Marsha Limper, Becky Brookshire, Kathy Wilson, Debbie Nuckles, and Jacquetta Harp. Cyndee Witchey earned her cap, but was ill and was not able to take part in the ceremony.

(Week of November 27, 1962)

A pile of sugar beets containing 31,000 tons of Grant County produced beets, was stored at Sullivan Spur west of Ulysses and went for $14 per ton. Homer Nixon of Ulysses, said the pile was 140 feet wide, 30 feet high and a quarter of a mile long. The pile was valued at $434,000. Santa Fe railroad shipped the crop out at a rate of 45 cars per day. Freight rate was $2.15 per ton.

The City of Ulysses sold a bond issue of $29,594 to cover the constructing street improvement. Total costs of the improvements were $33,876.30, of which $4,281.85 were paid in cash by property amounts assessed against specific lots.

The gasoline rationing outlook for Grant County was assuming a brighter complexion. Farmers were allowed necessary gasoline to meet their needs. Farmers in Grant County were under a hardship by regulations placed on them by the ODT and the lack of receiving a Certificate of War Necessity.

D.S. Forsha, who formerly owned and operated the Ulysses Telephone Exchange, has returned, having moved back a couple of Weeks ago, and is again operating the exchange, having taken it over from the Interstate Utilities Company, which failed to keep up on its contract with Mr. Farsha, from whom they purchased it two years ago.

The Mayor and City Council met in special session, the council having requested the Mayor to call a special meeting for the purpose of considering passing an ordinance relative to granting the Standard Oil Company the right to construct storage tanks within the limits of the City of Ulysses.
