Payton Sanchez, a sophomore at Ulysses High School, has been invited to participate in the Down Under Sports Tournament on the Gold Coast of Australia for Cross Country. He was the only one from Ulysses chosen to attend

Megan Zerr of Ulysses was crowned Miss Santa Fe Trail.

Jessica Henson, Ulysses resident, competed with seven other young ladies to claim the title of Miss Southwest Kansas She will travel to Prattin June to compete for the title of Miss Kansas with ambitions of moving forward to the Miss America Pageant.

Tennile Smith and Heath Stanley finished fifth at State Debate and each brought home a medal.

Kansans for Local Control has been formed by six Southwest Kansas counties for the purpose of preserving local control over public education and other key issues facing the region. Founding members are the counties of Grant, Kearny, Morton, Stanton, Stevens and Haskell.

Bob West filed for mayor Monday afternoon, paying his $5 fee and becoming the first candidate filed for mayor of Ulysses in the April 3 election. E.D.  Bruntzel, acting mayor since October 15, filed Tuesday for election as mayor.

Three Grant County farmers and their families were honored for outstanding work in soil conservation Monday night when they received Kansas Bankers Awards. The three were Irvin Pauls, Eldon Pauls and W.R. Christian.

Many Grant Countians were ill with the flu this week, and the disease appeared to be gathering momentum - so far an exact duplication of the experience the county had a year ago. Numerous persons were seriously ill while others were continuing their daily tasks in spite of the aches and pains. An epidemic of measles was also hitting the younger ages of the school population this week.

Plans for the eight-room addition to the Hotel Ralsamore and other improvements to the hotel building were disclosed this week by Don Hart, owner of the building.

The 1943 Infantile Paralysis fund raising campaign is in high gear this week in Grant County. Tuesday night three benefit basketball games were  played at the high school auditorium, netting $25.80. Tonight, a benefit dance will be held at the Legion Hall. Music for the dance will be furnished by Marguerite Brown and her orchestra.

H.W. Stubbs was appointed as judge pro tem at Hugoton last Monday due to the fact that Judge F.O. Rindom was disqualified to sit on the case in question. Attorney Stubbs accepted the responsibility with the statement: "The defendant will get justice whether that is what he wants or not."

Harry Goodnight last week advertised a special sale on Gillette razor blades and placed them on one of his tables in the drug store for customers to see. He is now forced to call off the sale, as someone stole all of the razor blades.

R.W. Hennigh is getting ready to build an extensive addition to his residence on the ranch.

Mr. Albert Pearsall and family of Meade County are moving to Ulysses to make their future home.
