The winners of the Knights of Columbus Substance Abuse poster contest were Jesus Balderrama and Autumn Pauda. The contest is held each year for eight to fourteen year olds and promotes drug and alcohol abuse awareness.

The United States Achievement Academy announced that Jordan Higgins of Ulysses has been named a National Award Winner in Mathematics. This prestigious award recognizes less than 10% of American high school students. Jordan is the son of David and Tammy Higgins. He attends Kepley Middle School and was nominated by Georjean Perez.

Stephanie Acosta and Josette Partida, both Ulysses High School juniors, are competing for the title of Miss Cinco de Mayo. The girls sell tickets and the one that sells the most wins the title. They also win scholarships to help them further their education.

Three students from Ulysses are among those who have received degrees from the University of Kansas since the May 1981 commencement. They are Claudia Haefele O’Dell, Ph.D; Russell D. Killingsworth, bachelor of science, aerospace engineering; and Douglas G. Schrepel, bachelor of science, business administration.

Mark Walker, Brad Wooldridge, Robert Ward and Tony Bessire, Ulysses students at Fort Hays State College, were members of the basketball team winning the intramural championship at the college last Week.

Still using the old fire truck while awaiting repairs for the other, the Ulysses fire department made a dry run Friday afternoon to Lakin draw. Someone turned in an alarm at the sight of smoke rising from where Ray Fogleman was burning weeds and trash, Chet Riley, fire chief, explained.

They are: a son to Mr. & Mrs. Lloyd McCord on March 13; A daughter to Mr. & Mrs. Theodore Tilson on March 15; a son to Mr. & Mrs. John Gilchrist on March 15; a daughter to Mr. & Mrs. Leon Wilson of Satanta on March 13; and a daughter to Mr. & Mrs. Fred Harp an March 17th.

Twenty-one couples were invited to attend the party for parents of children in the nursery department given last night at the Methodist Church. A covered dish supper was served and the evening was spent informally.

The Priscilla club is holding its annual St. Patrick’s party this evening at the Legion Hall. A number of guests have been invited and a good time is assured to all who attend.
