Two special ladies will be celebrating their birthdays soon. Eunice Metcalf Smith will be turning 80 and her party is on October 6th at Country View Baptist Church. Hazel Allen is celebrating 85 years with a party at the Hugoton Senior Citizens Center on September 30th.

The Beta Xi Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma met Sept. 7th. Those attending enjoyed a delicious breakfast served by Twila Petitt, Marianne Sullivan and Cindy Wittman. Members were urged to help with the upcoming Fairy Tale Fair on September 24th.

Chance Rudzik of Ulysses earned second team Junior College All-American honors at defensive tackle. He was a first team All-Jayhawk Conference pick and the league’s Defensive Lineman of the Year. He is now at Pittsburg State University. Chance is the son of Bonnie Rudzik and Richard Rudzik and is a business major.

Fall sports festival king and queen candidates have been announced by Ulysses High School. They are Troy McEachern, Mike Ybarra, Eddie Franco, J. B. Ater, Shari Kliewer, Mona Sullivan, Jolynn Fort and Martha Ford.

At a recent city council meeting, Police Chief Chet Snider received a traffic law enforcement award and a no-death traffic award from the state department of public safety, on behalf of the Ulysses Police force.

(Week of September 27, 1962)

A new business called “The Needle Shop” will be opening in Ulysses next Week. The shop will carry a line of fabrics of all kinds, draperies and notions and supplies or all types of sewing. The business is owned by Mrs. Harry Clark and Mrs. O. V. Sidebottom, and is located in the American Legion building on South Main.

Bear Creek Boosters 4-H club met with 14 members answering roll call by naming their favorite school subject. Deana Sharp led the group singing and recreation was led by Joyce Reusser. The Floyds served refreshments and Marshall Walker showed a film.

(Week of October 1, 1942)

The Girl Reserves and Junior Class from the high school will sponsor a bingo stand, food and rummage sale in Ulysses on Saturday afternoon. During the afternoon and evening, the high school band will play a concert and sponsor the sale of War Bonds and Stamps.

The football team met in the Science hall Wednesday afternoon and elected Wayne Galloway as the team captain. He is a letterman from last year and will make a good and faithful leader for his teammates this year.

(Week of September 30, 1922)

E. F. Towler reports a visit from a chicken thief one night recently and says that they took a shot at him. Anyone who has had shot removed from his anatomy lately, please rise.
