Donald Lee Calhoun, 74, of Gunnison, Colo., died August 17, 2021, in Montrose, Colo.

He was born February 3, 1947, in Kansas and was raised by his aunt and uncle, Joanna and Lester Hemphill.

Donnie was a graduate of Grant County Rural High school. After graduation, he attended Otero Junior College in LaJunta, Colo. He lived in Brighton, Colo., where he worked for the Union REA.

Donnie married Marlene Steen October 26, 1974, in Coal Creek Canyon, Colo. They returned to Ulysses, where he farmed for many years. The two were married just two months shy of 27 years when Marlene died August 14, 2001, in Garden City, Kans. After Marlene’s passing, he moved to Gunnison, where he owned and operated the Last Chance Saloon.

Donnie’s hobbies included cars, motorcycle riding, four-wheel riding in the mountains, hunting and fishing. He especially enjoyed B-S’ing with his many friends and happy hour, which was his favorite time of the day, because he could do even more B-S’ing.

He is survived by his son, William Calhoun and wife, Lisa, and two grandchildren of Bozeman, Mont.; nephews: Dustin Gordon, Pratt, Kans.,  and Brandon Gordan, Wichita, Kans.

Donnie was preceded in death by his parents who died when he was very young; Aunt Joanna and Uncle Lester; his wife Marlene; and his sister, Kathy Hemphill Schwarzer.

A celebration of life event took place September 4, 2021, at Mike Halloway's Welding Shop in Gunnison, Colo.

Crippin Funeral Home and Crematory, assisted by the family, was in charge of arrangements.

Local graveside services are planned for 10 a.m., Saturday, May 6, 2023, at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses.
