The Ulysses Lady Tigers faced formidable competition Thursday evening in their first home quad of the season. Ulysses was swept by Pratt (25-15, 25-15), Garden City (25-17, 25-13), and Hays (25-22, 25-7).

Hays ended up sweeping the quad with the win over Ulysses, and wins over Pratt (25-15, 25-19) and Garden City (25-22, 18-25, 25-18). Pratt went 2-1 on the day with the win over Ulysses and loss to Hays, and a win over Garden City (18-25, 25-20, 26-24).

The Lady Tigers were 5-6 overall heading into this past Tuesday’s triangular in Guymon, Oklahoma. against Guymon (8-5) and Cimarron (8-2).

Head coach Jillian Scott said the Lady Tigers had some great moments in the 3-match stretch but didn’t capitalize on some opportunities when they had the chance.

“The day started a little rough against Pratt, but even after being down early in the first set, they put up a fight and had some great moments,” Scott said. “Against Garden City, we again had some good moments, but we just are not sustaining for long enough stretches to win against other talented teams.

“Our best set of the night came against Hays in the first game, but ultimately we fell in two sets.”

The coach added that every loss is a learning opportunity.

“I believe that even when we don't win matches, there is always learning that can take place, and improvements that can be made if you can learn from the experience,” Scott said.  “Knowing that we pushed Hays in the first set, and had a 22-18 lead before they took the win, should make the girls feel pretty good about what we can do.”

Hays came out of their trip to Ulysses with a 9-5 overall record and are battling Great Bend in the Western Athletic Conference.

“Hays is a talented team that runs a solid offense,” Scott said. “We do a good job defensively, which has to be one of our strengths because when we walk into a gym, it is very likely we will be the shortest team on the floor.

“But, what we might lack in height, we make up for with our efforts and attitudes on the floor about what we can do.”

The trip to Oklahoma began a tough stretch of 19 games in 14 days, culminating in the GWAC tournament on October 12.

“I look forward to seeing what we can do as we push through this part of our season,” Scott added.
