Larry Paul Metcalf, 73

Larry Paul Metcalf, 73, passed away January 13, 2022, in North Hollywood, California. He was born April 15, 1948, and grew up in Ulysses, Kansas, the son of Paul and Pearl (Carter) Metcalf.

His dream was to make a livelihood through his love of music. In high school, he and a group of area young men formed a band called, “The Moondogs,” and he sang and played the bass guitar. They played at various spots throughout the area and were in several Battle of the Bands competitions with area bands. After graduating high school, he went on to study music and received his master’s degree from Northern Illinois University. His composition String Quartet No. 2 aired on Texas Public Radio in 1996. He created an electronic music degree program for St. Philip’s College of San Antonio, Texas, and in 1989 formed the St. Philip’s College Jazz Choir. In 1999, the jazz choir performed at Carnegie Hall. In 2005, he was hired to establish the Folsom Lake College Choral Program. He retired in 2014, and moved to North Hollywood to be near his daughter and grandson. Larry is remembered for his laugh and his funny and amazing stories from a long and diverse musical career. He loved sharing pranks, puzzling, and singing musical standards with friends and family.

Larry is survived by his daughter Hillary (Marty) Schenk and grandson Jacob Paul Metcalf of N. Hollywood, California, and sisters Janice (James) Bauman of Haven, Kansas, and Pauline Littlestar (Tom Pinnick) of Ulysses, Kansas. Preceding him in death were his parents Paul and Pearl Metcalf, and his sister Jeanette (C.R.) Marvin.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service is planned for April 23, 2022 in Haven, Kansas at 2:00pm.
