Richard Lloyd Howard, 75

Richard Lloyd Howard, son of Arthur Lee Howard and Ruby Lee (Hampton) Howard, was born on September 20, 1946, at the family home near Ulysses, Kansas.  Richard went to be with his savior on September 23, 2021, at the age of 75.

In May 1964, Richard graduated from Ulysses High School.  He attended Emporia State University and graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biology and Chemistry.  He graduated with his Master of Science Degree in Counseling in 1989.  He retired for the first time in 2003 following a teaching career of 34 years of teaching students in St. Charles, Missouri; Burlington, Kansas; Howard, Kansas; and Eureka, Kansas.  He returned to Eureka Jr/Sr High School for one year and a year at Altoona Midway before retiring in 2005 for his career of 36 years in education.

On June 9, 1968, Richard Lloyd Howard and Loria Lou Bohn were united in marriage.  To this union were born two sons; Bret Howard, Bart Howard, and one daughter; Lauren (Howard) Ham.

At an early age Richard accepted Christ. He was a member of Jefferson Street Baptist Church in Eureka, Kansas.  Through the years he was a strong mentor, educator, and coach to countless others.  His support for his family was constant and unwavering.  Richard was active in church by serving as a Sunday School Director, Church Treasurer, and Trustee.  He also served on the Greenwood County Conservation District Board, Greenwood County Rural Water District 1 Board, and the Greenwood County Cattlemen’s Board.

He is survived by his wife, Loria of Fall River; his 3 children, Bret and wife, Cristy Howard of Uniontown; Bart Howard of Fall River; and Lauren and husband, JD Ham of Fort Worth, Texas; eight grandchildren: Alyssa and Danielle Howard, Tristan and Trey Howard, and Taylor, Jenna, Kinsey, and Lucas Ham; a brother, Ronald Howard of Longmont, Colorado; and two sisters, Bess Smith of Roosevelt, Utah; and Mary Lou Martin of Roosevelt, Utah.  Richard was preceded in death by his parents, and seven siblings, John, Clifford, Kenneth, Raymond, Leroy, Arthur, and Maybelle Ellison

The family would like to thank Greenwood County Home Health Care, Laurie Coble, Greenwood County Hospital, Greenwood County Hospital Rehabilitation Department, and Dr. Basham for all of their help during these difficult times.  

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Wednesday, September 29, 2021, at Jefferson Street Baptist Church, in Eureka with Pastor John Craighead officiating.  The family will greet relatives and friends from 1:00 P.M. to 1:45 P.M., Wednesday at the church.  Interment will follow South Lawn Cemetery, Severy.
