Site Council Discusses Bond Issue, End Of Year Activities

USD214 Superintendent Corey Burton spoke about the process of obtaining a school bond for USD 214, during the site council meeting for Kepley Middle School April 18.

"We have a committee of about 40 people that have met to discuss what the future might look like. We know that part of that will probably be working towards a school bond that will have an impact on all of the buildings and our kids moving forward," said Burton.

The ultimate goal is to begin the process between September and November, according to Burton who described it as "an exciting and busy time". So far, Burton said he has been met with favorable opinions on obtaining a school bond.

Gee added that talks of a bond have been in place before COVID-19 put a halt to the possibility.

Burton encouraged parents to look out for information pertaining to the school bond. Community meetings will be held in the future to open discussion and opinion to the public.

In other business: Gee provided an update on the Kansas Education Systems Accreditation (KESA).

The accreditation program is a five-year process, with 2023 being the fifth year. Gee explained the efforts of USD 214.

“We are in continuous school improvement–every building in the district," Gee explained. "All improvements are documented and sent to the Kansas State Department of Education then to the Kansas State Board of Education."

According to Gee, there are three levels of accreditation: fully accredited, conditionally accredited, and not accredited. The Kansas State Board of Education will make a determination of accreditation in May.

Calling it a "movement toward unity," Gee announced the KMS Cubs will return next school year as the KMS Tigers.

Assistant Principal Kevin Self worked hard to make the change possible. Athletic uniforms, aside from wrestling uniforms, will not need to be updated.

The next item on the agenda was the schedule for the last day of school. The eighth grade class will enjoy their last day of middle school on Wednesday, May 16, beginning with an awards ceremony at 9 a.m. Eighth grade recognition will take place at 6 p.m. at Ulysses High School followed by the celebration dance at Grant County Recreation Commission's Activity Center.

The last day for sixth and seventh grade will be Friday, May 19 with a noon dismissal. Award ceremonies will be held at 8:30 a.m. for seventh grade and 10 a.m. for sixth grade.

There will be a parent meeting for fifth graders attending KMS next school year on Wednesday, May 3.

At this time, there are no site council meetings scheduled for Kepley Middle School for the remainder of the school year.
