USD214 School Board, Officials Prioritize School Upgrade Options

Posted

The Ulysses School District Board of Education and building administrators met April 26 to discuss which project to include in the district's upcoming bond issue proposal.

The bond will fund improvements to district schools. Board members and administrators are working to pare down the list of possible projects based on safety and security, fiscal responsibility, durability and flexibility, and a focus on students' futures.

"We will need to focus on items that need to be addressed while also planning for the future of the school district," said Corey Burton, superintendent. "As the picture becomes more clear, we will be sharing more and more information with everyone."

Consultants have identified over 100 options at all four district schools that could be addressed. These include plumbing, fire safety, accessibility for those with limited mobility, mechanical systems, lighting, roofing, and cosmetic improvements.

The district does not intend to proceed with all options, as the total cost would exceed an estimated $80 million. Some project funding could be found through the district's capital outlay budget, which is reserved for purchasing equipment and repairing school buildings.

The board has not yet finalized its decision about which projects to pursue.

The next bond issue meeting will take place May 9 at Kepley Middle School library.
