The UHS Odyssey of the Mind team has qualified for World competition. Team members are Bailey Twilleger, Kyler Barlow, Lundon Wiginton, Zach Miller, Austin Cantrell and Anthony Cortez. Worlds will be held in Ames, Iowa from May 23 to May 26.

Efren and Becky Perez are proud to announce the birth of their son, Ayston Blaze. He was born March 13, 2002 at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital. He weighed 5 lbs 12.5 oz and 20 3/4 inches long. He joins big brother, Tanner, at home.

(Week of April 15, 1992)

Several students from Ulysses took part recently in the Kansas High School Power Lifting Championships with over 500 other competitors. Sean Hagerman was the Heavyweight State Champion in Dead Lift; while in the Bench Press, Chris Tedder, Cory Post and Melodie Faulkner placed second in their respective weight classes. The team is coached by Kim Stewart.

The Grant County State Bank is celebrating its 75th anniversary with a Week filled with special events. Monday was Ora Byers Day, honoring the bank’s first customer; Tuesday was Ladies Day and Wednesday was Mens Day with gifts for all; the business community and farmers day is Thursday; Customer Appreciation on Friday; and Kids Day Saturday with balloons, candy, clowns and other fun activities for the younger set.

The Ulysses two man golf team took first at the Lakin golf meet with a score of 176. Bob Brown scored and 85 and Jeff Kreie’s score was 91.

Linda Buckner, the lone speech festival entrant from Grant County Rural High School, scored ones in both her events at the state speech festival in Dodge City. She performed in both poetry interpretation and extemporaneous speaking.

(Week of April 17, 1952)

The Monday Study club entertained 31 club children at an Easter party held in the Home Ec building. The event was hosted by Doris McDaniel, Genie Binney and Charlene Williams. The children enjoyed an Easter Egg hunt, two movie cartoons and refreshments.

(Week of April 16, 1942)

Caps and gowns were checked out to the graduating class this Week. The seniors will make three public appearances in the grey wool robes -- baccalaureate service, commencement and senior chapel. Graduation is scheduled for Sunday evening, April 19th.

(Week of April 14, 1932)

Little Jerry Sullivan underwent an operation at Garden City having had his tonsils and adenoids removed. He was brought home Tuesday by his father, J. P. Sullivan, and is getting along nicely at this time.

100 years ago

(Week of April 15, 1922)

We were visited by a severe wind storm with some snow last Monday. The wind did considerable damage with windmills torn down, fences and small buildings blown over, and Carl Walker’s home lost its roof.
