Recent speakers at the Ulysses Rotary Club were Annie Groomer, Alison Davidson and Ashlin Bohl who reported on their trip to RYLA leadership camp. Much of what they learned will be applied in their leadership roles in the high school Impact program.

In results from the Primary Election in Grant County, Carl Higgs defeated Tom Gregg and Dale Stevenson in the Republican race for County Commissioner District 1. Higgs will take on James Randle in the General election. Randle was the only Democrat candidate in the race.

This year’s Turtle Race winners were Cally Underhill, 1st; Nicolaus Grounds, 2nd; K. C. McCabe, 3rd; and Kelin Smyth, 4th. The races were once again sponsored by the Grant County State Bank.

The sweepstakes-winning float in the Grant County Fair Parade this year was the champion Artistic float by USD 214. Champion juvenile float was by Cimarron 4-H Club; Junior Civic and Study had the champion Humorous float; and the top commercial float was by the Ulysses News.

Mark Carter spent a five-day session at The Top of the Nation Wrestling Club near Estes Park, Colorado. He took third place out of 33 heavyweight wrestlers. Mark will be a sophomore this fall at Ulysses High school. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Carter.

Lyle Morris was elected president of the Ulysses board of education at the meeting held on August 9th. Other officers are Paul Brewer, vice president; Patricia Traster, clerk; and Earl Boldt, treasurer.

(Week of August 14, 1952)

A wheat crop of 2,730,000 bushels was raised in Grant County in 1952, according to the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Average yield was given as 21.5 bushels to the acre.

(Week of August 20, 1942)

The mortgage on the Christian Church will be burned at a special ceremony in Ulysses September 6th. Already, the money has been raised and sent to the church extension board to pay off the last of the debt. A program is being planned in connection with the ceremony.

Ted Rosel and family expect to leave Sunday for a ten day outing in the mountains near Taos, New Mexico, where Ted will try his luck at trout fishing.

Mr. and Mrs. Claude Jarvis, Mrs. Ernest Webster and Mrs. Chas. Shorter enjoyed Saturday evening eating ice cream at Mr. J. H. Jarvis’.
