Ten Ulysses High School students had at least 10 inches of their hair gathered into a ponytal and snipped off to send to Locks of Love. Students who donated their hair were: Rosalinda Ochoa, Bryn Wooley, Allison Deleon, Mel Kreie, Lili Franco, Amanda King, Emily Rowe, Monica Garcia, Lov Mireles, and Kristin Holtorf.

Two teachers, Gayle and Jessie Archuleta, were named Who's Who Among American's Teachers. Gayle taught third grade at Hickok Elementary and Jessie taught physics, electronics and earth science at Ulysses High School.

USD 214 received Certificates of Excellence awards in the 1982 Kansas Association of School Boards Publications Competition for the UHS student handbook and the Courier newsletter. They received certificates of merit for the school calendar. Also that year, the Town of Hickok was named in the Wall Street Journal due to being in the listening area of KANZ Radio.

A blanket of snow several inches deep, temperatures reported at eight degrees, slowed harvest activity. Carl Brollier, Moscow, was named one of the top 14 United States farmers to receive the 14th annual Form Farm Efficiency award, by Ford Almanac. Brollier raised nearly 2,000 acres of wheat; 2,400 acres of milo and 800 acres of alfalfa each year. He raised corn with an average of 150 bushels to the acre.

Ulysses Tigers opened the new basketball season with a win "the hard way" at Leoti. They came from behind in the fourth quarter to gain a 52 to 44 score.

Plans for an open house at the new Grant County Rural high school building were announced by the school board. The building was not yet completed at the time and work on the auditorium was still in progress.

(December 10, 1942)

Wearing white armbands for identification, Legionnaires patroled the streets to check compliance with a proposed blackout. Grant County participated in the nine-state, 20-minute blackout scheduled for 9 o'clock mountain war time, 100 percent. Members of the Grant County American Legion post were appointed as air raid wardens and had the authority to enforce regulations.

Community members had the opportunity to dance to the sounds of Lloyd Snyder and his orchestra, "The Biggest Little Band in America". E.C. Elling was in Grant County to give a meat cutting demonstration and to conduct a pork production meeting at the Farm Bureau office.

(December 9, 1922)

Mr. Gray and family from up toward Lakin moved on the Cox ranch last week. Two of the boys enrolled in Ulysses school. Joe Thompson of Partridge, Kans., who owns the farm occupied by C.O. Lewis, sent a wrecked broem house to be erected in the place of the one recently burned. Neighbors are assisting Mr. Lewis with the building. cleavered grain.
