This year's Business Builder of the Year was awarded to The Movies on Saturday, February 2, at the annual Chamber Awards Banquet. The award is voted on by the Chamber membership. John Nichol was awarded Ambassador of the Year, and John Koon was awarded the Table Top Award on behalf of Western State Bank. The banquet was very well attended.

Alco Discount Stores was in the process of remodeling the former Gibson's building. It was announced that the new ALCO store was to open at the location in May of 2003.

Kent Wheeler was hired by USD214 to be in charge of the 21st Learning Center/After School Program.

State Representative Eugene Shore wasat the Legislative Breakfast at Peddler's Restaurant. He told those in attendance he didn't think the "people in Kansas want" casino gambling, and that the school finance plan was "bad timing." Shore also noted that Corporate hog farming would be a "tough decision and an emotional one."

Hickok Elementary organized and established their own internal post office, as part of a program spearheaded by Becky Schloemer, a teacher at Hickok.

SantaFe Depot was the subject of a study by Grant County Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber discussed the possible relocating and remodeling of the SantaFe Depot, citing the opportunity for new office space and meeting area. The depot was left vacant in November 1982.

In use as a frame for a painting is a window from the old courthouse which was moved in 1909 from old Ulysses. The window is now used as a frame in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lance.

No joint action on Grant County School District consolidation will be taken at this time, although one elementary district of the county may attach to the Ulysses grade school district. The decision to drop district consolidation was taken by acounty unification committee meeting Thursday night, January 31.

The largest output of DeKalb seed from the Ulysses plant since it was built is keeping the plant working at full capacity, Max J. Howitt, manager announced.

Patrons of school district 2 voted almost two to one Tuesday in favor of a $490,000 bond issue to be used in the construction and equipping of a grade school building. The proposed new 14-classrooom unit will be the second grade school operated by district.  The vote was 360, yes; and 196, no. Five ballots were spoiled in the 561 total cast.

A total of $166.53, was raised in the1943 Infantile Paralysis Drive in Grant County. Of this amount, $61.47 was paid out for expenses incurred while conducting the campaign. Expenses were confined to hiring of an orchestra, express, tax, and postage. The Grant County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis received a check for $52.53, as its share of the drive.

Last year the social welfare department in Grant County received commodities with an approximate value of $3,000 for distribution. The bulk of the commodities went to the school lunch program.

County Treasurer Agnes Brewer reports that on the first of February the total amount of taxes paid in amounted to about 31 percent of the total compared to 44 percent a year ago, and that the commissioners were thinking of extending the penalty awhile longer in an effort to get in all that they possibly could.

At a meeting of the Ulysses Country Club held in the tea room of the hotel Tuesday evening, the following officers were elected to handle the club's business for the ensuing year: President, Joe White; Vice President, D.T. Hart; Secretary-Treasurer, H. W. Stubbs.

Assistant General manager Bristol, Chief Engineer Felt and some other SantaFe officials made an inspection trip over the new road on Tuesday, returning to Dodge Tuesday evening.
