Carol Tarbet stepped down as President of the USD 214 School Board at their July 9, 2012 meeting. She is serving her last term on the board after 18 years. Margaret Nightengale was selected unanimously to become the new President.

There’s a new restaurant in town! The grand opening of Chick-a-Dees was held on July 13th at 100 N. Main. The building has been newly remodeled by owner and operator Lucy Guerra. The restaurant serves Mexican and American food and breakfast all day long.

David Harbour of Ulysses has received the Bronze Star Medal. Specialist Harbour is in his second enlistment and has been in the service for four and a half years. He received the medal “for exceptionally meritorious achievement in support of actions against a hostile force in the Persian Gulf.”

(Week of July 22, 1982)

The Grant County Fair Board has the ultimate responsibility for the county fair, scheduled for August 9th through 15th. Serving on the fair board are: Lynda Fort, president; Dick MacKinnon, vice-president; Derald Winger, secretary; Mont Sullivan, treasurer; Robert Annis, Donnie Phelps and Marshall Walker, executive secretary.

(Week of July 20, 1972)

Navyman Lonnie J. M. Walters, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest R. Walters of Ulysses, visited Malaga, Spain aboard the aircraft carrier USS John F. Kennedy. His ship’s six day stay in the southern Spanish coastal town marked the first time an aircraft carrier had visited there.

The Ulysses News will host an open house on Friday at their new plant at 218 North Main from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Visitors will be able to see how the newspaper is printed. Copies of the News and the Grant County Republican from the past 50 years will be on display.

Ben Oliver announced the sale of his International Harvester Implement business to Harold Farthing and Leslie King. The transfer was effective on July 15th. The new owners will be doing business under the name “Ulysses Equipment Co.”

(Week of July 16, 1942)

The “love thy neighbor” commandment was demonstrated at least three times in Grant County last Week. One group of farmers cut J. E. King’s wheat, another couple hundred or so came with tractors to control the fire at John Mayhew’s farm, and another group did what they could when the temporary living quarters of the Joe Jungfermans went up in smoke.

The Grant County Library now has 638 books on record. There are 168 non-fiction, 362 fiction and 108 juvenile. When you want a good book, come to the Grant County Library.

(Week of July 22, 1922)

In the ball game last Sunday between Satanta and Ulysses, the score was six to four in favor of Satanta. The second teams played with a score of 13 to 26 with Ulysses winning.
