Chisholm Branscum of Ulysses traveled to Hawaii for a Cross Country running camp. During the seven day trip, she learned about the culture, tried new activities like surfing, and of course, spent a lot of time running. Chisholm is the daughter of Trina and Lou Branscum.

Jim Wilson was elected Chairman of the Grant County Recreation Commission Board at the July meeting. Gina Cavasos will be vice-chairman with Kristy McKellar as treasurer. Jeff Pfingsten and Dave Seibel are the other members of the board.

After 21 years as a school administrator in USD 214, Bill Brown has resigned effective July 31st to accept early retirement. Brown has served as principal at Red Rock, Joyce and Hickok schools and has been the Associate Superintendent in charge of the District auxiliary services for the past six years.

(Week of July 29, 1982)

Ulysses gymnastic students performed for the residents of Western Prairie Care Home after the July 20th community dinner. Those performing were Tess Lamberson, Brandi Lamberson, Cherie Wise, Michelle Meyers, Kim Kapp, Laucinda Contreras, Kelly Jordan and Kelly Phipps. The girls are coached by Steve Schuman.

(Week of July 27, 1972)

Beginning Thursday, August 10th, downtown stores in Ulysses will stay open late on Thursday instead of Saturday nights. The stores will be open until 8:00 p.m. on Thursdays and will close at their regular times on Saturdays.

(Week of July 26, 1962)

There were no injuries as the result of a collision at the intersection of Main Street and Sykes Avenue in the rain early Tuesday morning. A Pioneer Cooperative pickup driven by Sy Hileman and a car driven by Eugene Molby hit in the intersection. Damage to the Molby car’s side was estimated at $250 while lesser damage was done to the front of the pickup.

(Week of July 24, 1952)

Eight babies occupied the nursery at Bob Wilson Memorial hospital early this Week which resulted in a full house. Hospital superintendent Sister Bernice said this was the second time since the hospital opened that all nursery beds were taken by newcomers to the area!

A USO was organized in Grant County with officers elected and a campaign to raise $200 for the national fund underway. Mrs. Lloyd Keller was elected county chairman. Other officers are E. B. Rodgers, Bee Jacquart, Mildred Binney and Kathryn Binney.

(Week of July 28, 1932)

The marriage of Miss Gladys Ann Randle to Leo Monson last Saturday in Hutchinson came as a surprise to their many friends here. Miss Randle is well known here, having taught at the Shockey school house the past two terms. Mr. Monson operates the Monson garage and is a popular young businessman of this city.

The front page of the Republican featured this ad for C. H. Binney. “I can supply for you anything in the way of groceries for the busy harvest season. A good supply of flour, cured meat, potatoes, canned goods and dried fruit. Come in and get prices.”
