Local students pedaled into the hearts of Ulysses residents when they participated in a Bike-A-Thon. The children took donations from residents and rode bicycle and tricycles for money pledged. All together they raised $1,876.75 for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

(Week of November 11, 1992)

The Grant County library will be celebrating Children’s Book Week Nov. 16-22. This year’s theme is CATch a Book. This would be a “Purrfect” time to bring your child to the library and check out books, make a library card for your child if they are six years old, and sell all the different cat posters in the Children’s Room. Crystal, a horse that belongs to the Stutz family, will be here from 4 to 5:30pm. Crystal has a book written about her entitled, Crystal’s Vision, and a poster with her picture on it. The book and poster will be on sale, and Crystal will autograph your book for you with a special stamp.

The Ulysses High School choral department will state the musical “Oklahoma!” on November 19-20 at Kepley Auditorium. This will be the first time in more than 10 years that Ulysses people will have the opportunity to see a locally staged performance of “Oklahoma!” The Rogers and Hammerstein musical has its setting in Oklahoma at around the turn of the century.

Two thefts on two farms in the same neighborhood on the same night have been reported to Sheriff Kenneth Christian, who guessed they may have occurred ten days ago or longer. From the Merle Nickerson Jr. farm, and the Richard Coffey farm, were taken two saddles, a bridle, saddle blanket, and a welder, that have been missed so far, Christian said.

A smoking overhead heater caused a fire run to the Gray & Rosel store at 3:45 o’clock Friday afternoon. When the store staff discovered smoke they could not locate, the fire department was called and firemen found smoke from the heater was going into the attic and then coming inside the store. There was no damage or smoke damage to merchandise, it was reported.

Bids on a remodeling project of the present high school building were opened at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon. The building will quarters for the music department, hot lunch, and home economic department when the project is completed. Funds for the work were included in the bond issue for the new high school building.

Lloyd Smith, proprietor of the former Gay Grocery, has changed the name of the grocery store to the Bon ton Gro. & Mkt. Mr. Smith recently purchased the Gay Grocery from Walter Gay, when his enlistment in the Army was imminent. Smith is advertising some week-end bargains elsewhere in The News.

(Week of November 11, 1922)

A Ford car which was left running near the Roberts store yesterday suddenly broke mooring and struck across the lot for a kettle where the boys were rendering lard. It demolished the old stove, upset the lard, and then changed its course for the new produce house, but it was checked in its mad career and brought again into captivity. Yea, might is the Ford.
