The Grant County Library has planned a “Teen Read Week” for October 17th through 22nd. Fun activities are planned all Week, including drawings, pumpkin carving and a movie. Sign up in the Young Adults Department at the library or call M. J. Perez at 356-1433.

(Week of October 18, 2001)

UHS Seniors Alesha Anderson, Beth Eudey and Veronica Bansemer qualified and participated in the 4-A State Tennis Tournament held in Pratt. The doubles team of Anderson and Eudey placed third at state, while Bansemer finished in ninth place.

(Week of October 16, 1991)

Many awards were given out during the Annual 4-H Achievement Banquet on October 8th. Among the winners were: Sarah Noriega and Jennifer Clyde - I Dare You Leadership award; Shannon Alford and Sarah Noriega - Kansas City Conference winners for leadership; Melanie Slaughter and Joey Rose -  Key Award. Pat Noyes was given the “Friend of 4-H” award for her many years of dedication with the dog project.

The toe of John Hastert kicked a successful 35-yard field goal in the waning moments of the fourth quarter to give the Tigers a 16-14 homecoming victory over the Meade Buffaloes on Frida night at Maxwell Field.

The country home of Mrs. Nadine Howard took on the look of a haunted house at the annual Halloween party for the Southwest Cosmetology Association. Everyone came in costume for the party. Towns represented were Dighton, Garden City, Friend, Lakin and Ulysses.

(Week of October 12, 1961)

Ulysses Irrigation Pipe Company began building cement pipe this Week in the first operation of Ulysses’ newest industry. Equipment is still coming in and a stock of aluminum pipe is temporarily stacked on the ground near the manufacturing plant building.

The Junior Civic and Study Club met October 8th at the home of Marion McGlohon. 17 members and the sponsor, Mildred Binney, answered roll call. Mary Alice Schwein reported that the tulip project for city park was complete. The next meeting will be a Halloween Masquerade - complete with husbands - at the home of Ruby Williams.

(Week of October 16, 1941)

Mrs. Curtis Retherford was not injured when she struck a cow on US 160 four miles west of Johnson. She was returning from Springfield, Colorado, and was accompanied by Mrs. Neil Peirce and son. The Retherford’s Buick sedan sustained damage to a fender and the grill of the motor.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Kepley celebrated their Silver Anniversary with a twelve o’clock dinner and a social gathering of many relative and friends on October 11th. The Kepleys received many beautiful gifts of which they are very proud.

(Week of October 15, 1921)

Tobe Brewer and Oscar Gilbert returned Thursday from New Mexico where they were on a hunting and sight-seeing trip in the mountains. Tobe reports killing a black bear and Oscar caught a mustang colt. They had a very pleasant time.
