This past 4-H year, local girls made and sent dresses they made as part of their sewing projects to “Little Dresses for Africa.” Those girls who sewed dresses were Jessie Watson, Michelle Barb, Kensie King, Hannah Saxon, Graci Phelps, Colsie Metcalf and Riley Shore.

(Week of August 29, 2002)

The Quarterback Club which is comprised of parents of players, fans, coaches and business sponsors, fed the Ulysses Tigers football team this past Friday. All the players enjoyed food from the Sonic Drive-In. The club meets Weekly on Tuesday to watch the previous Weeks’ game.

Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Rouse will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on September 6th. Friends are invited to a reception on Sunday, Sept. 6th at the First United Methodist Church hosted by their children.

Nicholas Michael Long was born on August 27th to Mike and Janet Long. He weighed six pounds 14 ounces and was 19-1/2 inches long. Issac Blaze Velasquez was born on August 27th to Raul Jr. and Lorena Velasquez. He weighed five pounds 13 ounces and was 19 inches long. Both baby boys were born at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City.

New officers were selected at the PTA meeting held on Wednesday. Deanna Johnson was elected president; first vice president is Jodie Gray; Liz Hastert will be second vice-president; Dolores Bender, secretary; and Esther Walker, treasurer.

(Week of August 30, 1962)

Earl Fort has been employed by the Grant County State Bank. The announcement was made by bank president Floyd V. Pinnick. Fort will receive his masters degree in agricultural economics from Kansas State at mid-term. He is a life-long resident of Grant County and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Fort.

(Week of August 28, 1952)

The 1952 Grant County Free Fair was a record breaker according to Extension Agent Marshall Walker. He said that 1133 exhibits were displayed, a record number. All events had big crowds on hand. The jalopy races and both rodeo performances had capacity gatherings.

(Week of September 3, 1942)

The invoice for Red Cross sewing has arrived, Mrs. H. F. McCall, production chairman, said yesterday. It calls for 705 yards of material for refugee sewing. Ninety-five operating gowns and 65 womens’ blouses are in the allotment.

(Week of September 1, 1932)

The Ulysses tennis team journeyed to Hugoton last Sunday and beat the home team 4-2. This keeps Ulysses in third place. Playing was made difficult by the hard wind and required almost as much skill to keep on their feet as it did to play the game.

100 years ago

(Week of September 2, 1922)

The grade schools in Ulysses will not start until September 11th on account of the buildings not being ready. All pupils are requested to meet at the school house on September 8th to receive their assignments.
