Brad & Sonja Wooldridge have a new grandson, Owen Wesley Wooldridge. He was born August 28th in Tampa, Florida to Wes & Lainey Wooldridge. His big sister is Zoey. Owen weighed 8 pounds, 7.5 ounces and was 21 inches long. His great grandparents are Edward and Maxine Wooldridge of Ulysses.

Scott Hilton was selected Student of the Year for 2001-2002 at Kepley Middle School. He is the son of Rodger and Marsha Hilton. He was selected on the basis of good citizenship, effort and academic success.

Myrtle Armstrong was named Citizen of the Year at the annual Home Products Dinner. The 1993 Pioneers of the Year were also announced. They are Irene and Alvin Lance.

Sonja Hathaway of Ulysses won a blue ribbon in clothing and textiles at the Kansas State Fair. She placed first in embroidery with a hand towel and third in counted cross-stitch. Peggy Alford placed third in color slides in the fine arts photography division.

Miss Melinda Johnson, 14, will have something to talk about for awhile, as well as her own phone to talk about it over. Out of about 500 entries, Melinda won a telephone for a year, including installation and all local calls. McDonald’s Department Store will foot the bill as part of their back-to-school promotion.

The 1962 head lettuce harvest started September 18th on the Ruben Blehm farm northwest of Ulysses. The first lettuce was shipped by truck after going through the vacuum cooler at Ulysses.

Classes at Grant County Rural High School elected officers last Week. Senior class president is Bert Casey and president of the junior class is Earl Fort. Bill Sullivan was elected president of this year’s sophomores and Loretta Wiebe will lead the freshman class.

Mr. and Mrs. David Sullivan are the parents of a daughter, Dana Kathleen, born Friday weighing 7 pounds, 1-3/4 ounces. Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Gee also have a new baby girl. Linda Rugene was born Monday and weighed 9 pounds.

Members of the Women’s Farm Bureau units are planning to hold a Grant County historical day in about two Weeks. The program will be open to the public and will need the help of several to make it a success. The ladies are searching for pictures of pioneer days and old fashioned clothing. The words and music of old pioneer songs are also desired.

The Clean Cafe changed hands last Week. James Reed retired and C. E. Leierer and Chas. Crowl took charge. Reed moved to Dighton upon his retirement.
