Mid-Kansas Electric Company announced it will build an electric generating station 13 miles east of Ulysses in Grant County. The board of directors voted recently to name the station after Perry Rubart, a long time trustee from Ulysses-based Pioneer Electric Cooperative, Inc.

(Week of September 5, 2002)

A music booster club is being formed by concerned citizens to assist teachers and maintain the quality of the music program in the Ulysses school district. According to Greg Soelter, one of the organizers, “Due to state budget cuts, a previously held position for a music instructor was not filled this year. Overworked teachers were asked to absorb the responsibilities.” The group’s first official meeting will be on September 12th.

(Week of September 9, 1992)

Girls’ varsity folf took first place at Hays with the score of 235. Ulysses had three of the top five medalists. Shannon Alford and Molly Leddy tied for third by both shooting 57. Mandy Binney was fifth medalist. Other team members are Nikki McKown, Kelli Campbell, Kelli Wooldridge, Jennifer Kimball and Alisha Nordyke. The girls are coached by Darrel Dees.

(Week of September 9, 1982)

A total of $1,065.35 was raised through special events in connection with the Muscular Dystrophy drive in Ulysses over the Labor Day Weekend, according to Nancy Bortz, local chairman this year. In addition, $847 in pledges were called in for a total of $1,912.36 locally. First place moneymaker was Brad Bortz with $304.31.

(Week of September 7, 1972)

After 36 years in the movie business, Bo Crocker has sold the Crocker Theatre and the Ulysses Drive In to Richard Dudley, effective September 1st. Dudley is moving to Ulysses with his family and will be the sole owner. The Crockers plan to travel some but don’t have any definite plans.

(Week of September 6, 1962)

Mrs. Marshall Walker’s cookies won second place in the state Grange show at Lawrence. Mrs. Walker will receive an 8mm camera at the state meeting in October as her prize. Two other Grant County bakers qualified for the state competition - Mrs. Jess Limper with her angel food cake and Mrs. Edgar Jarvis with a loaf of bread.

(Week of September 4, 1952)

An overhead blinker light was installed at the intersection of Highways 160 and 270 in Ulysses. The intersection has long been a dangerous one. Many minor crashes and a few extremely severe ones have occurred at the location.

(Week of September 10, 1942)

Hot lunches will be served to grade and high school children again this year at the banquet room of the high school auditorium. Mrs. Salome Livesay has been employed as cook. Meals this year will cost the pupils ten cents each or ten lunches for 95 cents.

Mr. and Mrs. Rosel and daughter, May, returned from their vacation which was spent in the mountains of New Mexico near Taos. Ted located the finest fishing place in the state and substantiated his claim by proudly exhibiting part of his catch to the boys around town last Week.

(Week of September 9, 1922)

Mr. and Mrs. Pierce Hampton and Mrs. Laura Hoffman went to Lakin on Saturday and got their Ford loaded with fruit. They visited Saturday night with Mrs. Hoffman’s sister who lives at Kendall.
