Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital Volunteers met in the Cooper-Clark Room of the Library at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, September 10. Vice President Bonnie Walters called the meeting to order at 9:35 a.m., with the reading of the Prayer for Hospital Volunteers.

Roll call was taken, and 10 members were in attendance: Sue-Ellen Borthwick, Vana Campbell, Daena Gallegos, Joyce Gilbert, Jeri Howard, Taunya Lindahl, Kim Martin, Carol Rider, Jeryl Smith, Dolores Ungles, and Bonnie Walters.

Secretary Sue-Ellen Borthwick read the minutes of the September 10 meeting. Bonnie moved and Vana seconded the motion to approve the minutes.

Communications received during the past month included the Sunflower Newsletter and a flyer regarding the pumpkin decorating contest at the hospital. Sue-Ellen passed around a thank you card to be signed and sent to Eileen Stroh for the handmade baby items that she donated to the BWM Hospital Volunteers.  Taunya received a notice concerning the Hospital Volunteers credit card account, but said there was some incorrect information she would have to call to get corrected.

Treasurer, Taunya Lindahl, reviewed the financial reports for the months of August and September.  She reported Hospital Volunteers made $610 from the linen sale.  The organization received 25 percent of the sales.  She also reported she has filed the State of Kansas Information Report.

Volunteers also discussed donating some of the large supply of baby hats in storage to the Garden City gift shop since they have a use for them.  There was also discussion concerning collaborating with Garden City and Dodge City in purchasing gift shop items in order to receive a better price based upon volume.

Daena moved and Sue-Ellen seconded a motion to approve the Treasurer’s report.

Old Business

The Pink Lady schedule was discussed and since there are presently very few to help with this service, the person who is tending the gift shop has been filling in part of the time.  Members were encouraged to get the word out concerning the opportunity to be a part of the Hospital Volunteers.

It was reported the next blood drive will be January 8, 2026.

It was pointed out it is very difficult for outsiders to find the number to call to connect directly with the gift shop.  It will be included in posts and flyers in the future to make it easier for customers to contact the shop.  The number is 620-356-6083.

New Business

The financial report concerning Fall Fest is not yet available, but due to high winds, the event shut down early.  The unsold cinnamon rolls were given away to hospital staff members.

Taunya reminded everyone that dues paid from now through November 9, will be eligible for Grant County Gives, as is the case also with any donations to Hospital Volunteers for the Health Fair or other purposes.

There was discussion concerning who should have a credit card and it was voted that in addition to the President and Treasurer, gift shop manager, Kim McGaughey should have a card with a $3,000 limit.  Daena moved and Sue-Ellen seconded the motion.  Taunya will work with the credit card company to accomplish this.

Decals that Jeri Howard had ordered for the children’s play area at the clinic have arrived and Sue-Ellen and Daena will get them up.

Plans for Lisa Guinn to come and speak to the hospital staff and Volunteers have been postponed.  Volunteers will refer to Joyce Brom for ideas on how to use the funds available for a spiritual project.  One suggestion was little polished wood pocket crosses.  Another idea was more tray favors.  Sue Goldsby has been providing these.  There was also discussion concerning the stock of items used for patient bags.

There is a sign-up sheet at the gift shop for baking muffins and there will also be one for working the canteen at the Health Fair October 25.  The question of how we provide the orange juice came up.  Daena will discuss with Delores to find out how this has been handled in the past, since she and Joyce have traditionally taken care of this.  Mary Sullivan is the contact if we need help with providing the muffins.  We will also want to bring our sign to have on the table at the canteen.

The Boo Bake sale will be October 30, and there will be a sign-up sheet to work the sale at the gift shop.  Taunya will start posting on Facebook concerning this event.

Grant County Gives Hospital Volunteer’s raffle drawing will be November 8, at noon at Bear Creek at the Non-Profit fair.  Hours for the Non-Profit Fair will be November 7, 10am–9pm and November 8, 9am-Noon.  Volunteers will be needed to work the table at this event in order to accept donations.  A sign-up sheet will be at the gift shop.

It was the consensus of members present at the meeting Hospital Volunteers will not participate in the Tumbleweed Bazaar this year.

Taunya and Sue-Ellen, as the nominating committee, opened discussion concerning the slate of officers for 2026.  Joyce Gilbert was nominated as a member-at-large, as were Kim Martin and Vana Campbell.  Daena Gallegos accepted a nomination as co-President, to team up with Delores Currier, current President.  There were no other nominees for the officer positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer or Secretary and all current officers agreed to continue in their 2025 positions.

Sue-Ellen Borthwick presented the complete slate of officers and members-at-large as follows:

Delores Currier, Co-President; Daena Gallegos,Co-President; Bonnie Walters, Vice President; Sue-Ellen Borthwick,Secretary; Taunya Lindahl,Treasurer; Vana Campbell, Member-at-Large; Joyce Gilbert, Member-at-Large; and Kim Martin, Member-at-Large.
