City Approves, Signs One Cent Sales Tax Resolution To Be Put To A Vote Of The People

Superintendent Corey Burton continued the discussion on the proposed one percent special sales tax for USD 214 during a recent City Council meeting, June 14.

The school board voted to move forward with the resolution to run a school bond August 29.

Burton asked the council to put the one percent special sales tax up for a vote for that same date.

Koehn informed the council he had previously reviewed the resolution so it would only need to be passed by the council.

The resolution is conditioned upon the passing of the school bond. If the school bond does not pass, the special tax won't be implemented. However, even if the special tax doesn't pass, the school bond will still move forward with a different mill rate. The special tax will save about five mills, according to Burton. The resolution was passed and signed unanimously.

In other business, an update to permitting UTV's within city limits was given with an encouraging outcome.

First, Mayor Tim McCauley called for opinions of the council.

“We’re going to have to do a ton of legwork and paperwork but I want to talk and see how everyone feels about it,”  he said.

Sam Guy inquired about the regulations surrounding the allowance of UTV’s.

City Attorney Lynn Koehn explained the process that will be followed to build a sufficient ordinance. The overall discussion hinted at an optimistic outlook for UTV owners within the city.

An executive session took place at the end of the meeting. After a 15 minute session, the council came back with no action taken.

The next city council meeting was planned for 5 p.m., Wednesday, June 28, at  City Hall.
