City Approves Updated Hwy 160 Project

Ulysses City Council approved an updated Highway 160 Project during their regular meeting January 25.

City Engineer Pete Earles told the Council the original project plan was broken into two “phases” from the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT).

Phase one involved rebuilding the road from the intersection of Missouri Street and Oklahoma Avenue going east, stopping just before Stubbs Road; approximately between Casey’s General Store to JJ Oil (Sinclair).

Phase two would be the rebuilding of the intersection of East Oklahoma Avenue and North Stubbs Road/South Road K.

The original estimate for phase one was $1.3 Million, and phase two was $1.65 million.

According to Earles, the State was going to give the City a maximum of $2.5 million. Earles said the State would like to tie the phase one and two projects into a single larger project.

Earles said this project would be pushed back a year while the State designs the new combined project.

A motion was moved and passed to inform the State that the City would like to combine the two projects into a single larger project.

In other business: The Council appointed Trevor Grimes to the vacant spot on the Board of Zoning Appeals.

The Council looked at two bids for road crack sealant from McConnell and Associates (MAC) and Crafco.

For 44,000 pounds of sealant, MAC gave a bid for $31,504. For 45,000 pounds of sealant, Crafco gave a bid for $31,365.

The Council moved and passed the motion to accept Crafco’s bid for $31,365 for 45,000 pounds of sealant.

For the rock cover after the sealant, the Council looked at two bids from Klotz Sand Co. and Huber Sand. Klotz Sand Co. gave the bid for $36 per ton for 3,500 tons. Huber Sand gave the bid for $45.52 per ton for 3,500 tons.

The Council moved and passed the motion to approve Klotz Sand Co.’s bid for $36 per to for 3,500 tons. This will cost approximately $126,000.

The next regular meeting of the City Council is scheduled for 5 p.m., Wednesday, February 22, at City Hall.
