Derald Dean Winger Sr., 76

Derald Dean Winger Sr., passed away on Christmas night, December 25, 2022, at the Attica Long Term Care Facility at the age of 76. 

Derald was born August 11, 1946, in Garden City, Kan., to Ralph Eugene and Wanda Naola (Ford) Winger.

Growing up on the family farm south of Ulysses, Derald attended Ulysses schools, graduating high school with the class of 1964.

Furthering his education, Derald attended Pittsburg State college and received a degree in Mechanical Engineering.  He then returned home to farm with his father.

Derald was united in marriage to Bette Susan Chinn September 5, 1965, in Ulysses.  They continued living on the farm, where they raised sheep and farmed wheat, milo, and corn. 

Derald became part owner and manager of Case Tractor and Implement in Ulysses. 

The couple were blessed with two children: Angie Michelle on October 24, 1966, and Derald Dean Jr., "Derry" on July 5, 1970.

In 1990, Derald, Bette, and Angie moved to Longmont, Colo., where Derald worked as a mechanic for a tractor and implement business.  Then in 1998, the couple moved to Harper, Kan., to help Bette's parents.  A year later Derald started a business of doing home repairs.  In his spare time he started building furniture and toys.  Derald became a part of the Attica Long Term Care Facility family in early 2016 due to declining health.

Derald was a farmer, mechanic, and wood worker.  He loved going to coffee every morning with the many friends he made in Harper. 

Derald served on the vestry at St. Johns Episcopal Church in Ulysses and Grace Episcopal Church in Anthony. 

He also served on the Farm Bureau and Fair Boards in Ulysses.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Wanda Winger; brother, Donald Eugene Winger; and brother-in-law, Kelly Chinn. 

Derald is survived by his wife, Bette, of the home; children, Angie Higgs (Wes) of Cheney, Kan., and Derry Winger Jr (Lisa) of Wichita, Kan.; grandchildren: Ryeder Winger, Madison Winger, Mason Winger, and Dayton Higgs; sister, DiAnna Patterson (Norman) of Ulysses; sister-in-law, Judy Winger; in-laws: Richard Chinn (Linda), Anne Chinn, Rusty Chinn (Diane), and Kyle Chinn; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.

A Come and Go Celebration of Life is planned from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, February 18, at Corporate East in Ulysses, celebrant is Pastor Rita Stockton from Upper Room Episcopal Church in Lakin, Kan.
