Fire Chief: Farmers 'Good At Following, Knowing The Rules

Posted

Grant County FIre Chief John Crosby is "hesitant" to go in to burn bans.

"We’ve been pretty good here," Crosby said. "The farmers here kind of know what the rules are."

According to Crosby, the rules include allowing burning.

"We allow burning," he said. "We recommend they do a burn, because if they don’t, the fuel builds up and then when we do have a fire it is usually really bad. So, we like it when they burn the fuel off."

Crosby said they do ask those doing a control burn to follow some guidelines.

"All that we ask them to do is burn during daylight hours," he said. "And, the wind has to be below 15 mph. They have to call in to the law enforcement center and tell them when they are going to start burning and then they call them when they are done burning. They have to monitor the fire at all times."

Crosby said the farmers in Grant County have been good to follow the rules.

"So, we really don’t have a lot of false alarm calls, because the farmers have been so good," he said. "They’ve gotten to where they know what the rules are and  we hardly ever have any of them break those rules. We have pretty good luck here with those types of fires. (controlled burns)."
