According to a spokesperson for Seward County Sheriff's Department, they received a call around 8:50 the morning of February 28, to north central Seward County, in the area of U.S. Highway 83 and Mile Marker 17.

Authorities were able to confirm the remains were human; however, identity of the remains will take some time.

"The identity has not yet been determined," authorities said. "Additional processing and testing will be conducted in order to assist in the identification of the subject."

They have not said if they believe the remains are that of a male or female or whether or not it appears they are from an adult or child.

"Positive identification, in this case, is expected to take longer than in typical cases," authorities said. "As a result, the public details of this investigation are limited at this time."

Seward County Sheriff’s Office authorities are being assisted by officials from Kansas Bureau of Investigations in investigating the death.

It is also unknown at this time if the remains were the result of a homicide, suicide, natural causes, or an accident. Authorities have also not said how long they believe the remains have been where they were found.

The investigation is ongoing at this time and information will be released as it is available.
