Johnson Woman Killed, Others Injured In Deadly Head On Highway 160 Collision

A Johnson, Kans., woman was killed in a head-on collision that was reported at 6:45 p.m., Monday, six and one half miles West of Ulysses on Highway 160.

Witnesses said Kamryn McFarland, 19, was driving a white sedan erradically on the highway just before the accident occurred. McFarland ultimately collided with a white van, driven by a white female who had three juvenile passengers. McFarland's vehicle came to rest in the roadway, facing East, and the van came to rest in a ditch after rolling.

Four ambulances were dispatched to the scene and transported those injured as they were extricated from their vehicles. Grant County Fire Chief John Crosby said the jaws of life had to be utilized on both vehicles in order to free the occupants. McFarland, who was transported to a local hospital, passed away from her injuries after her arrival there.

One of the witnesses to the accident was a Grant County EMT, who immediately provided assistance to those involved.

The occupants of the van, were all from Johnson as well. Two of the juveniles were teenagers.

Firefighters and EMTs were on the scene for approximately 45 minutes as they worked to free the occupants, assess them and get them loaded in to ambulances for transport. Each was transported as soon as they were freed from their vehicles.

Highway 160 was blocked for awhile as responders worked at the site of the crash.

Those at the scene reported that some of those involved were wearing their seatbelts and some were not.

McFarland was a third grade teacher at Harvest Christian School in Ulysses.

As of press time, there was not a report available from the Kansas Highway Patrol regarding the accident.
