National Institute For Jail Operations Visits Jail Facilities Throughout May

Posted

A representative of the National Institute for Jail Operations (NIJO) was in Ulysses and surrounding communities in May to visit local jail facilities.

"Our team member visited 18 jails across the country this last week," a spokesperson for NIJO said on the company's Website."Today we highlight some of those facilities visited over the weekend!"

Among the stops for the  NIJO representative, he  visited Seward County Law Enforcement Center in Liberal, Kans., Kearny County Law Enforcement Center in Lakin, Kans., Grant County Law Enforcement Center in Ulysses, and Sherman County Law Enforcement Center in Goodland.

"What a great week of visits," the spokesperson said. "With a few more to come!"

According to their Website, NIJO was formed in 2011 as the "primary resource dedicated to serve those that operate jails, detention and correctional facilities."

"Recognizing the enormous liability and increasing litigation facing administrators, NIJO provides a compilation of legal-based resources and information for agencies to make facilities safer and more secure, proactively defend against frivolous litigation, and protect against adverse publicity and liability," the site states.

NIJO offers the following resources under one umbrella with legal-based emphasis:

Legal-Based Jail Guidelines

Self-Audits & Assessments

Professional Certification

JAILCON and Other Legal-Based Training

Online Training (DACOTA)

National Accreditation

Model Policy & Procedure

Verification Inspections

Legal Consultation

These resources are a far departure from the past traditions of "best practices" that may undermine administrative discretion and do not reflect current case law uniquely applicable to each facility, according to NIJO.

"In corrections, with limited budgets and resources NIJO represents jails and detention facilities by providing the most current information and resources from a welcomed, trusted source," a spokesperson said.
