Phillip Harp, Sr., 89

Phillip Harp, Sr., died Friday, January 13. He was born to Bevely Frando and Annis Jones Harp, August 6, 1933, in Washington County in the community of Sonora, Ark.

Phillip was a member of the Nob, Hill Fire Department for many years, and was later on their board of directors. He was president of the Sonora cemetery for several years.

Phillip loved to hunt and fish and enjoyed reliving his sporting trips over and over with his hunting buddies. He loved to “coffee” and talk about old times. Some of his special memories included going to Canada fishing with his son and grandsons each summer and his hunting trips to Colorado.

Phillip served in the United States Marine Corps. When he got out of the military, he went to Ulysses, and went to work for L&R Fertilizer.

He married Gladys Spencer and they spent the first 17 years of married life raising their family there. He also served as a 4-H leader during that time.

He and his family moved back to Sonora, Ark., in 1973 to help his father farm. They had 20 acres of apple trees and grew lots of produce, including corn and watermelons. His father, "Frando" and Phillip both enjoyed growing the big pumpkins, which they also sold at their Harp’s Orchard and Market. Phillip always worked hard to provide for his family. He will be greatly missed.

Phillip was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Spencer Harp; his parents; brother, Paul and Vance Harp; sisters, Pauline Evans and Dolores Lankford.

He is survived by two sisters, Allene Scroggins and Juanita Jackson; three children: Jacquetta Edwards, Phillip Harp Jr., and wife, Valerie, and Shari Devor and husband, Terry; nine grandchildren: Chandle Carpenter, Phillip Harp, III (Trey), P.J. Derwin, Peaches Smith, Chad Harp, Christy Devor, Travis Edwards, Melody Pashia, Hannah Oliver and 19 great-grandchildren who were the highlights of his life.

Visitation took place from 12 noon until 2 p.m., Saturday, January 21, at Sisco Funeral Chapel with services immediately following.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Nob Hill fire department, 19375 Nob Hill Loop, Springdale, AR 72764.
