Four Promotoras from Diversidad Latina attended the 8th Annual Kansas Community Health Worker (KSCHW) Symposium in Wichita on June 15. Lucy Watie, Community Health Specialist with Immunize Kansas Coalition (IKC), was also present at the event. Watie serves Grant, Haskell, Hamilton, and Kearny counties.

Promotoras Marisela Aguilar, Laura Santos, Josefina Pando, and Rocio Perez attained new experiences during a breakout session titled Walking Alongside Grief. The session was presented by Joy Bishop, MSW, LSCSW. The  Promotoras have been motivated to gain as much experience and knowledge as possible to be more involved in the community. Watie attended the CHW's and Incarceration breakout session, presented by Suzana Hernandez of the Sedgwick County Health Department. Geovannie Gone, Director of Diversidad Latina, was appointed as a new Commissioner for Kansas Hispanic and Latino American Affairs Commission (KHLAAC) by Governor Laura Kelly on June 14. We are thrilled to announce that Governor Kelly has appointed Geovannie Gone as a new KHLAAC commissioner. In a quote from KHLAAC, "Commissioner Gone possesses the qualifications to help us create a more equitable society for Kansas Latinos".

Before heading to the Symposium, Watie was called to the Kansas Immunization Conference in Salina on June 14. "I was so excited to attend this conference," said Watie. The most memorable sessions on the agenda, for Watie, was Reducing Pain and Trauma Associated with Childhood and Adolescent Immunizations. "I tell you what, that Shot in the Dark film is a must watch," said Watie. "I highly recommend it."

In total, over 200 CHW's and their allies were present at Wichita State University's Rhatigan Student Center for the Symposium.
