School Board Discusses Improvement Projects

Posted

The Ulysses School District school board, district officials and community members met March 22 to review needed repairs and upgrades to district schools.

They also determined guiding principles to assist in determining which projects will receive priority in an upcoming bond issue.

District officials recognized that while there are many things that could be done in schools, it is important to respect community resources and put necessary repairs and improvements first.

To determine which projects to prioritize, those in attendance agreed that safety and security, fiscal responsibility, durability and flexibility, and a focus on students’ futures should be deciding factors.

“I think this is right in line with my thinking about what’s important moving forward,” said Corey Burton, superintendent of USD 214.

Those at the meeting said they want schools to prepare students for the future after graduation, whether that means college or work. They also want spaces that can adapt to new technology and educational tools, as well as shifting student needs.

They also said buildings should be accessible to anyone, regardless of physical limitations, and should be a secure but comfortable place to learn.

McCown Gordon Construction had worked with the district to identify potential areas for improvement. Possibilities include improving accessibility according to the Anericans with Disabilities Act, ensuring building code compliance, and including spaces for collaborative learning.

Other areas include cosmetic upgrades to improve building appearance and environment, such as lighting and flooring.

The district will continue to discuss projects at 5:30 p.m. on April 13 at Kepley Middle School.
