Teresa Hammond Just Loves Creating Fiber Art

Posted

There are several new artists now displaying their talents at Main ARTery in Ulysses. One of them is local artist Teresa Hammond, who began displaying her weaving projects in August. Teresa has had a love for fabric and cloth for years and now has the time to learn new skills and create. She has her own business, Jornada Textiles, and is currently showcasing rugs made from alpaca fiber and some cotton towels that she has woven.

Teresa has lived all of her life in Ulysses and Hugoton. She is married to Phil Hammond, who has his own business, Hammond Remodeling. They have one son, Aaron, who is the vocal music instructor at the middle school and high school in Ulysses. He is married to Alyssa and they have one daughter, Piper, who is five years old. Teresa’s parents were longtime residents of Ulysses who now live in Texas - LaVon and Jeannice Walters.

Teresa became interested in working with alpaca fiber after she and Phil began raising alpaca in 2005. Like any livestock, the alpaca required a lot of time and attention which was a lot of work for two people. After twelve years, the Hammonds “rehomed” their alpaca. Teresa has a garage full of fiber which should last through many projects. She retired a year ago from Skyland Grain after working in the Co-op system for over 30 years. So now, the fun begins.

Teresa loves sharing her love for fiber arts with others and has spent time showing her art to 4-H kids. She has looms of all sizes for her weaving and has also learned to spin her own thread. She says that her inspiration to create comes from her love of tapestry and learning the history of fiber arts. She has teamed with Dixie Flowers to offer a place for like-minded people who enjoy knitting, crocheting and all things “fiberly.” The group is called Knit Happens and they get together in the back room of Twice Upon a Time on Thursdays.

When asked who her favorite artists were, Teresa said that she really likes the work of Rebecca Mezoff and Jane Stafford. She became acquainted with Mezoff when she began taking online training from her. While looking for a guild, she ran across Stafford and has been working and learning from her.

Stop in to the Main ARTery and look at the wonderful pieces created by Teresa Hammond. She is looking forward to expanding her inventory, sharing her love of fiber art, and introducing weaving and spinning to a whole new generation.
