Top Scorers Recognized In American Mathematics Contest At UHS

Students at Ulysses High School recently competed in the 2022-2023 American Mathematics Contest.

"The kids have been participating in this contest for probably at least 30 years," said UHS Math Instructor Robert Buhr. "It's a contest given across the country all on the same day to bring awareness and an appreciation to mathematics and problem solving."

Students who participate do so at their respective schools, according to Buhr.

"At UHS we have our own contest among the kids," he said. "It gives the kids a chance to stretch their thinking skills, problem solving, and mathematics in general."

Buhr said the questions in the competition are "pretty tough", and sometimes responses can depend on how confident one is in their response.

"It's a 25-question contest," he added. "They try to answer as many as they can. If they get one right, they get six points. If they miss one they get zero points. If they leave it blank they get one and a half points. They can't narrow down the answers. They have a little over an hour to complete the questionnaire."

UHS has two divisions: the freshman and sophomore students compete against one another and the juniors and seniors are in the other division.

UHS had 30 students compete this year: 19 in the freshman/sophomore division, and 11 in the junior/senior.

Not everyone competes.

"They just sign up if they are interested," Buhr said.  "We ecourage as many as want to to do it."
