The Ulysses Gun Club is located northeast of Ulysses and features two well-maintained, north-facing trap fields, including lighted fields for evening shoots. In February, the club received a grant from Sublette Pioneer and CoBank to upgrade its lighting.

The club has about 19 members, with several traveling to participate in the Kansas Trapshooting Association (KTA) and Amateur Trapshooting Association (ATA).

This past week, 11 members participated in the Southwestern Grand in Wichita, Kansas.

On Tuesday, Tyson Adams won A Class Doubles in the Big Red Motorsports Doubles with a score of 97/100. He followed that with a win in the Mid Kansas Ag Singles in Class AA with a 99/100.

On Wednesday, Mike Hoskinson shot a 97/100 in the Straight Line Singles and competed in a carry-over shoot-off. In the Steve Taylor Doubles, Richard Verhage won C Class with a 94/100.

Thursday started with a bang when Shawn Massey and Richard Verhage both shot 99/100 in the MTS Custom Coating Singles. Massey took home the A Class trophy. Jerrad Banning, a newer shooter at the club, won D Class with a 96 and secured his first 50 straight in registered targets.

During the Taylor Made Guns Doubles, Richard Verhage shot a 94/100 in B Class and won his shoot-off for runner-up. Mike Horton tied with an 87/100 in Class D and took runner-up in the event.

Friday, in the Kevin Malian Doubles, two club members tied for runner-up with scores of 93/100: Taylor Jones and Richard Verhage. Verhage took B Class runner-up. In the Caesar Guerini Preliminary Handicap, Shawn Massey won a shoot-off for Sub-Veteran with a 95/100.

Saturday featured 200 singles in the Browning Singles Championship. Braden Hoskinson shot a 195/200 and finished as runner-up in B Class out of 463 shooters.

The other club members did not walk away with trophies, but the scores were still impressive. The lowest score from the club was 185/200, or 92.5%, followed by a 92/100. The highest score from the club was 99/100, followed by a 97/100.

In the final event Sunday, Braden Hoskinson shot a 97/100 and Taylor Jones shot a 96/100. Hoskinson finished in the top five in Junior Gold, while Jones finished fifth overall.

Only two club members walked away empty-handed, but by golly, they had fun!
