Ulysses Serves as Host to First Home Tennis Tournament in 10 Years

History was made at Ulysses High School on Thursday, Sept. 17, as the Lady Tigers hosted their first home tennis tournament in 10 years.

Six teams competed in the Ulysses Invitational, including Ulysses, Colby, Goodland, Garden City, Liberal and Scott City. Matches began at 3 p.m. at the UHS tennis courts and continued into the evening.

The Big Flavor Co. food truck was also on location during the tournament, giving fans and families another reason to stay and enjoy the evening.

For the Lady Tigers, the tournament was especially meaningful because it gave the players the opportunity to compete in front of a hometown crowd.

UHS sophomore Natalie Landeros said she enjoys tennis because of the time she gets to spend with her teammates.

“I love tennis because I love playing with my team. It’s my favorite sport,” Landeros said. “I joined because I wanted to try something different.”

Landeros competed in doubles with Talia Flores during the tournament.

Senior Teagan Deyoe said this season has brought a lot of positive energy with a new head coach and new courts.

“The energy this season with a new head coach and new courts has been high,” Deyoe said. “The support we have had, I really appreciate. Everyone is working extra hard to make it special this year since it’s my senior year.”

Head Coach Andy Cole said he was thankful for the support the team received during the home tournament.

“I want to thank the community, students, teachers and administrators that all came out to support the team,” Cole said. “None of the ladies have gotten to play in front of a hometown crowd in their tennis careers, so you made a lasting memory for them.”

Cole also thanked Assistant Coach Lauryn Payne and Nyla Sherman for helping run the tournament, along with the senior parents and others who helped make the event possible.

The return of home tennis gave the Lady Tigers a chance to compete on their own courts and celebrate a special moment for the UHS tennis program.
