As I write this people are (or at least should be) headed to the polls. Today (Tuesday) is election day.
When I went to cast my vote, before I finished, several young people came in. I was very glad to see that. And, I was very happy to show my identification to prove I was a registered voter - something that every polling place should require. Yes, I believe if you have to have an ID for so many other things - voting should be among them.
As of this writing, I do not know how the election has turned out. I do know that I am praying this morning, hoping that people use common sense. I hope no one is allowing celebrities to tell them how their vote should be cast. Just because they have a talent that has earned them money does not make them experts on what is good for this country. They, like all the rest of us, have a right to their beliefs and opinions. However, just because they have money and fame does not mean they should be telling the rest of us how to believe. I really wish they would stick to their talents (if they really have any) like singing, acting, etc. If they want to be politically involved, perhaps they should go in to politics (Ronald Reagan did).
I have a real problem taking political advice from those who go out in public half or more naked. To me, and I know I will get some push back here, respect can be earned or not earned depending on how you present yourself (including in what you wear).
For instance, I would take the advice of someone covered in dirt from a hard day's work before I would take advice from someone wearing a small piece of cloth that really doesn't cover anything at all. I don't really believe they are selling their talent so much at that point as something else entirely.
There has been way too much clout attached to celebrities, when if you researched further you would see the money in their pocket does not go hand in hand with common sense or doing the right thing.
I would also not vote for someone simply to make history. If you think about it, some of the things we have made history for haven't always been good things. Although some which have been downright horrible may have had a positive result here and there. But at what cost?
Electing someone because you want to show how "progressive" we are as a nation is not a good reason. We need a leader who will have the good of the people first and foremost in their decision making. And those decisions are not easy by any means.
I think somewhere along the line we have forgotten what the office of President means. We have forgotten we can't just elect someone in to office and then turn our backs and "hope" they will do the right thing. We have to hold them accountable. We have to quit making excuses for them. We have to quit being like a certain bachelor on a television show who consistently said, "it's okay".
Why?
Because it's not okay. It's not okay to make decisions that harm the very people you are supposed to be making them for.
We have to quit fighting and making politics a sporting event where we are more concerned with whether or not "our team" won, and start demanding decisions which keep this country the great country it can and should be.
No, you can't help everyone. There are always going to be those who no matter what you do for them, they will make bad decisions. However, if we have the right leaders in place, the majority of the people will be okay. We should be working together as a country, not working to tear each other apart.
So, I don't know yet how the election turned out. But regardless of who "won" the most votes. I hope "we the people" won and we ended up with a leader who remembered why they were elected in the first place. To take care of "we the people".
I don't care how much money they have - I care how much love they have for this country and that they are putting this country first and foremost in their decision making.
On both sides of the aisles, I would hope we all want our Veterans taken care of. I would hope we all want to have our senior citizens taken care of. I hope we all want life to be valued. I hope we all want to not be taxed so much we can't even just live. We need to be able to survive. We need to take care of each other and ourselves. We need a leader who knows what being a leader means.
