When the world began, so did conflict. There has always been times when man did not agree with man. Woman did not agree with woman. And you all know that women did not agree with men (and vice versa).
These conflicts sometimes grew in to all and out wars. Wars with people killing people in the name of something. It is a reality we will never be able to shake - that some people are just out right mean and are out to do others harm.
The Civil War saw brother pitted against brother. Father against son. Neighbor against neighbor. It was a very difficult time and many lives were lost.
No matter what conflict it has been, man (and woman) have fought for what they believe in - whether it be right or wrong. They have fought for their countries - even when many times their country did not fight for them. When the call came - they went. They gave what they had - some gave their all.
Veteran's Day is a day set aside to honor these men and women and tell them thank you.
I, however, do not feel that is enough. I think each and every time you see a veteran - shake their hand. Tell them thank you for serving their country. Tell them thank you for fighting for not only themselves, but for each and every man, woman and child in this country.
I think it is a crime that we have veterans in this country who are homeless. Veterans who are struggling to get by. Veterans who are struggling to function. We should never take for granted what they have sacrificed for each and every one of us.
Not only do they fight for us. They leave their families far behind so that they can fight for us. In that respect, their families fight for us too. They serve right along with them.
Our country isn't perfect by any means. We have a lot of work to do. And it may seem crazy to some but there are a few things we should hold very dear. No, I'm not talking about gold or silver. I'm not talking about a fancy home or fancy car.
I'm talking about a flag that represents all of us. I'm talking about the very air that we breathe.
It makes me angry to hear someone is treading on our flag, our national anthem, etc. Yes, veterans served so you could have the freedom to do what you do. However, with that freedom comes responsibility. And the least we can all do is take that responsibility seriously. Treasure your freedom. Treasure those who fought and may have even died for it. Use your gift they gave wisely.
