The Blackout tradition drew a crowd to Golden Plains Credit Union on Wednesday, Sept. 23, as community members lined up to purchase shirts ahead of Friday night’s Ulysses High School football game.
Shirt sales began at 5:30 p.m., with a line already forming about an hour beforehand. The $10 shirts were sold as part of an effort to show support for the Ulysses High School Tigers and encourage fans to “blackout” the stadium during the Sept. 25 game.
Golden Plains Credit Union hosted the event, featuring food, music and Tiger spirit. The 1979 food truck began serving at 3:30 p.m. and stayed until the crowd went home, while a DJ played music for those waiting in line.
The line eventually wrapped around the block.
The Blackout tradition has spread beyond Ulysses, reaching branches across Kansas and even being spotted on a beach in Mexico.
Golden Plains Credit Union also uses Blackout events to support other schools and community activities, including Wichita Heights High School and Campus High School.
The tradition is intended to bring people together in support of local schools and community events.
