The Grant County Chamber of Commerce will present the 30th Spring Fling on April 13-15 at the Civic Center. Theme for this year’s show is “Totally Awesome 80s!”. Over 70 booths will be on display along with entertainment, games, food and more!

Sullivan School has announced the honor roll students for the third nine Weeks. Those with an A average are Patricia Barron, J. J. Casey, Guadalupe Esparza, Brandy Mader, Lacy Rundell, Kayla Stevenson, Meaghan Torres and Shelby Weber, all third graders; and fifth graders Madison Roberts and K. J. Watie.

El Ranchito has been recognized in the new book -- “Let’s Go Eat.” The guide to Kansas dining features 200 of the best eating spots in the state. The El Ranchito Cafe in Ulysses has been named in the book as a dining hot spot. The restaurant has been in business for 25 years and is owned and operated by the Romero family.

Ruth Cones’ sixth grade class at Joyce School completed their run-jog-walk of 1,481.5 miles in less than three months. That is the distance from Ulysses to Washington, D. C. All members of the class participated, but five are in the 100 mile plus club -- Andrew Urban, Doug Karber, Leslie Garmon, R. E. Vanderpool and Bob Mangels.

Ulysses Police Chief Chet Snider has announced that he has turned down an offer to become a private investigator in Texas and will remain in Ulysses as police chief. Snider has been a Ulysses resident for eight years and has served on the police force all that time.

(Week of April 5, 1962)

A school record that has stood for 13 years was broken by John Elliot at the Sterling relays. Elliot heaved the shotput 51 feet, 8.25 inches to break the Tiger record set in 1949 by Oliver Spencer and to win first place at the meet.

(Week of April 10, 1952)

Several students from Ulysses took part in the Southwest Regional Fine Arts Festival recently held in Dodge City. Three local musicians gualified for the state festival at Hays by receiving a one rating on their solos. Those three are LaNeve Floyd, Charles Beltz and Dale Gish.

College students home for the Easter break were Cecil Byers, Jim Wilkes, Charles Hickok, Bill Cantrell, Marshall Brewer, Mary Ann Reeves, Arlene Steen, Frances Jean Clay, May Rosel and Flora Jones.

There will be a Leap Year novelty dance held at the American Legion hall on Monday evening with music by the Spanish Serenaders. Price of admission is $1.00 to all ladies and all gentlemen will be admitted free when accompanying a lady. Unescorted men will be charged $1.00. Sponsored by the American Legion.

Dr. Miller has announced the birth of two baby boys in the county. A ten pound boy arrived at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Homer Gumm on April 6th. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Walker welcomed a baby boy at their home last Saturday.
