Logan Pelton, Austin Cantrell, Tregg Rodriguez and David Baca took first place in both the Free Relay and the Medley Relay at Scott City. They all swim for the Grant County Sharks Swim Team.

Nancy Mangels of Ulysses has received a five year $20,000 Presidential scholarship from Newman University. Students must have a 3.6 GPA and a score of 25 on the ACT or 1140 on the SAT 1 to be eligible. Mangels plans to major in elementary education.

Mr. and Mrs. Darrel Hickman will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary on July 15th. Darrel and the former Lynette Lane were married July 15, 1967 at the First Southern Baptist Church in Ulysses. The couple have one daughter, one son and one granddaughter.

Larry Bortz is the new President of the Ulysses Rotary Club. At the noon meeting at the Steak House, retiring president Perry Rubart was awarded a plaque in appreciation of his year’s service.

Ken Christian, Board Director of the Grant County Chamber of Commerce and the Grant County Fair Committee want to remind everyone that the parade theme this year is “America the Beautiful.” The parade will be held Saturday morning, August 19th.

Mr. and Mrs. Leon Shapland announce the birth of their son, Kevin Lynn, on June 18th at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital.

The Ulysses fire department made a run to the rural home of Verle Johnson on Friday morning where a combine was reported on fire. The fire had been extinguished and the machine was back in operation before the fire truck arrived despite the near gale blowing at the time.

Fishing licenses for the 1942-43 season are on sale at the county clerk’s office. They are good for one year beginning June 30th. The fee remains the same as in the past - $1.00.

Ulysses celebrated the Fourth in a very quiet manner. With no celebration planned, a number of our citizens went elsewhere to do their celebrating. Locally, the noise of the shooting fireworks was not so prominent as in year’s past and was confined to the smaller firecrackers.

We are in the midst of wheat harvest again, and on account of the big rains we had this spring, the grain is going to be of a good quality and the yield per acre should be reasonably good.
