Isabella Velasquez happily announces the arrival of her baby brother, Isaiah Blaze. He was born at 9:32 AM on May 23, 2012 and weighed 7 lbs., 6 oz. and was 19 inches long. His parents are Isaac and Stephanie Velasquez of Noble, Oklahoma. Grandparents are Raul Jr. and Lorena Velasquez of Ulysses and Danny and Connie Lovett of Decatur, Texas. Great grandparents are Raul Velasquez, Sr. of Ulysses; Velda Hoober of Grove, Oklahoma and Carl and Jean Lovett of Elmore, Oklahoma.

The 8th Annual Relay for Life will be held on June 14th and 15th at Maxwell Field. Bob Dale and Kimberlee Grice will kick off the event at 6:00 PM with the survivor’s victory lap. The luminary service will begin at 10:00 PM. Everyone is invited to come out and take part in the event.

Scholastic honors have been earned by 1,282 students at Kansas State University for the spring semester. From Ulysses, Darin James Neufeld and Jeffrey C. Joyce earned honors.

(Week of June 17, 1982)

The Sonic Drive-In team of Ulysses took second place honors in the ABC division of the Budweiser softball competition in Dodge City. The team is now assured a berth in the State Tournament. Don Button of Ulysses was given the title of Home Run King for the tournament.

(Week of June 15, 1972)

The first load of wheat in Grant County was delivered by Bill Leigh to the Bunge, Inc. elevator at Milepost on the evening of June 9th. The Leigh wheat came from dryland and tested at 11 percent moisture with a test weight of 62 pounds.

(Week of June 14, 1962)

J. O. Barnes expects his new coin-operated laundry and dry cleaning plant to open by June 16th. The 30x70 building will include 20 washers, eight dryers, four dry cleaning machines, a hair dryer, coin changer and other fully automatic equipment.

(Week of June 12, 1952)

Ideal Food Store’s ad had a good variety of fresh fruits and vegetables on sale this Week. Cantaloupe was 15¢ a pound, sweet corn was 29¢ for six ears and cucumbers were two pounds for 25¢. Also featured were oranges at three pounds for 29¢ and cherries for 37¢ a pound.

(Week of June 11, 1942)

Harvest hands will start at $4.50 to $5.00 per day in Grant County and increased according to their worth. This was decided by local farmers who met this Week at the courthouse and seems to be the average scale for western Kansas.

The Ulysses Community Aid held a social meeting at the home of Mrs. John Steen on June 10th. The occasion was in honor of Mrs. Newby, who was presented with a beautiful friendship quilt. Everyone enjoyed a program of songs and readings plus ice cream and cake.

100 years ago

(Week of June 17, 1922)

There was a good attendance for the Memorial services conducted Tuesday by the Odd Fellows and Rebekahs. The basket dinner was very much enjoyed by all. Rev. Monson of Hugoton and Mrs. Smith of Lakin were the principal speakers.
