Team Ulysses drove their Solar Car to a first place finish in Scott City. Senior team members are Josh Hickok, Wyatt Devore, Jesse Cavasos and David Heath. John Wolf, Sr. is the team’s coach.

UHS senior Aliana Hamer has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Colby Community College this fall. Aliana is the daughter of Warren and Marianne Hamer.

The Ulysses Gun Club held their regular monthly trophy shoot on May 3rd. Winners were: Todd Randles, short yardage, 81; Leighton Brengman, middle yardage, 97; and Cecil Wright, long yardage, 95. Jay Carr had the longest run and Brengman was overall winner for the day.

Mr. and Mrs. Duane Hubbell announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter, Nancy to Ronnie Mangels, son of Mr. and Mrs. Darrell Mangels - all of Ulysses. Ronnie works with his father and grandfather on their farm. Nancy is employed at Ulysses Office Supply. A July 9th wedding is planned.

Miss Brenda Walkemeyer, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Royce Snook of Ulysses, is the 1972 Miss Southwest Kansas. She will compete in the Miss Kansas Pageant in Pratt this July. Brenda performed a reading and musical number from “Hello Dolly” in the talent portion of the pageant.

Grant County 4-Hers will enjoy a county-wide skating party on Saturday evening at the Lakin roller rink. Full-O-Pep club will be the hosts.

City employees are making a big effort to have the swimming pool ready for the traditional Memorial Day opening. Kayo McGillivray will manage the pool this summer. The pool will be open from 1 to 6 p.m. daily with admissions prices of 20 cents for children and 40 cents for adults, according to Roy Gish, park commissioner.

Robert Waller was inducted into the U. S. Army recently and is now with the Signal Corps at Camp Crowder, Missouri, where he will take a three Week training course. Hubert McCall left yesterday for Kansas City, Mo., to take the examinations for entrance into the naval air corps.

Buy a Poppy on Saturday, May 28th! A group of girls will be on the street selling poppies. If by chance they miss you and you fail to get a Poppy, look one of them up and you will not be disappointed. Marjorie Brewer, Mary Ellen Sullivan, Marion Stubbs, Katherine McGillivray, Lucille Kepley, Nancy Terrill, Lois Cranston and Gayle Galloway are who you need to look for.

(Week of May 27, 1922)

The residence of Mrs. Agnes Carpenter was moved from the southwest part of town to the northeast area. The building was put on skids and pulled by the caterpillar engine and two army trucks belonging to the county. It was necessary to move the building to make room for the industrial track to be built here.
