This image features a detached hindwing from a monarch butterfly found in my yard. According to the Monarch Joint Venture, monarchs may lose pieces of their wings when birds attempt to eat them, when they become caught on something, or when they collide with an object. Monarch Watch’s monitoring of butterfly migration by latitude indicates that monarchs in southwest Kansas reach peak abundance between Sept. 19 and Oct. 1.
