Meet Lizet Heredia, an Emergency Nurse

Posted

Lizet Heredia is a registered nurse in the Emergency Department at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital. She began her healthcare career at just 16 years old as a Certified Nursing Assistant. From there, she continued building her education and experience in healthcare, eventually becoming a registered nurse and joining the hospital’s emergency department.

Heredia said she was drawn to nursing because she wanted to “make a difference in people’s lives, especially during the moments when they need someone the most.” Her experience in healthcare has since helped shape the way she approaches both nursing and emergency response.

Working in the ER requires more than medical knowledge. Heredia said, “It is about staying calm when things become overwhelming, being there for someone when they are scared, advocating for patients who may not be able to advocate for themselves, and treating every person with compassion and dignity.”

Although working in the ER can be demanding, Heredia said “the moments when I know I made a difference make everything worth it.”

Her responsibilities as an emergency nurse include helping stabilize critically ill patients, reassuring worried family members, and simply taking the time to listen.

“I believe the little things can have a lasting impact,” she said.

Her career in emergency nursing, she said, has helped her become “stronger, more compassionate, and more confident” while allowing her to serve others when they need it most.

Outside of the hospital, Heredia enjoys spending time with her family. She describes her family as a “very important part of my life,” reminding her why the work nurses do to care for others is “so meaningful.”

Heredia said she is honored to be recognized, and is especially appreciative of the “incredible team” she works alongside at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital.

Her recognition has provided an opportunity to reflect on her journey since beginning her healthcare career at 16, and on what continues to drive her work.

“I am grateful for every opportunity I have had to serve others and make a difference,” she said. The recognition, she added, “[means] a lot to me because it reminds me that the work we do matters."
