Nazario “Joe” Valdez, Sr., 76, died July 11 in Ulysses.

He was born September 10, 1949, in Brady, Texas, the son of Juan and Barbara (Morales) Valdez.

Joe grew up in Menard, Texas, where he spent his childhood before moving to Ulysses in 1968. He married Mary Garcia October 17, 1969, in Ulysses.

Joe worked for Ulysses Irrigation Pipe for 30-plus years, Inner Motion and for Ed Vanderpool at a mechanic shop, before retiring from Smyth Oil & Gas.

Outside of work, Joe found great enjoyment in the outdoors. He was a deer hunter and enjoyed spending time target shooting and bow hunting. He also had a passion for collecting coins and driving and working on his Camaro. Since retirement, he enjoyed taking care of his grand dogs, Misha, Charlie and Winston.

Joe is survived by his daughter, Alicia Johnson and husband, Bill, Johnson, Kan.; brothers, Walter Valdez and Jessie Valdez, Sr.; sister, Gloria Carrillo; as well as Mary’s family and many nieces and nephews.

Joe is preceded in death by his wife, Mary; son, Nazario Valdez, Jr.; and his parents.

Graveside service took place at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 15, at the Ulysses Cemetery in Ulysses, with Pastor Steve Swann, Jr. officiating.
