Mia Ochoa is only 10 years old, yet she is already a published author.
Her first book, My First Fruits, is exactly what its title suggests: a colorful introduction to fruits designed to help young children learn about the foods they eat.
At her book event, Ochoa confidently signed copies, posed for pictures, and answered questions from those interested in her work.
“Fruits help your body,” Ochoa said when asked why fruits inspired the book. “And they’re like the color of a rainbow.”
When I asked her mother what she thought, she said, “I’m excited for her.” She said she was surprised by how quickly her daughter took the idea and ran with it.
Ochoa told her mother she knew how to use Canva, a graphic design platform, so her mother handed her a Chromebook and let her work.
“I was like, ‘Okay, here you go,’ thinking nothing of it,” her mother said.
When Ochoa announced she was finished, she had already created 15 pages. Ochoa then personally selected the graphic designs by overlaying different fruit images in Canva.
“I didn’t even help her,” her mother said. “She had 15 pages. I was like, ‘Oh, okay, this is awesome.’”
The project was too cute to leave as an experiment, her mother said, and the pair decided to turn it into a real book.
Ochoa is already thinking about what could come next. She hopes to create My First Vegetables and books featuring animals, including My First Farm Animals and My First Zoo.
Ochoa said she wants her books to be specifically for little children and for parents who want to teach their children about topics like fruits, vegetables and animals.
Writing is not Ochoa’s only creative interest. She also enjoys sketching, although she said painting can be more difficult because mistakes are harder to erase.
For now, Ochoa has already found a way to bring art and writing together.
It is impressive that at just 10 years old, Ochoa has written and designed her own book. Even more impressive, she already has plans for what she will create next.
We congratulate Ochoa on her book, My First Fruits, and look forward to following her writing career.
My First Fruits is available for purchase on Amazon.
