Esau and Jacob were twin brothers, sons of Isaac. Esau was born first and should receive Isaac’s special blessing. But Jacob tricked Isaac into giving the blessing to him instead! (Hismother helped him do it.) Esau got so angry that Jacob had to leave home. It was years laterbefore they finally forgave each other. This is an important part of the Bible’s story of how God’s people came to be. But is it true? Were these real people?
Once again, we will look at just three important clues to help us decide.
Clue #1: Ancient history
Genesis gives specific names, places, and family lines in its account. Ancient historians recorded the same names and locations! For example, the Edomites (Esau’s descendants) were a real nation that enemies of Israel knew about.
Clue #2: Archaeology
Archaeologists found Edomite settlements exactly where the Bible says they lived. Customs like the birthright blessing were real practices in that time period!
Clue #3: Jesus and the New Testament writersJ
esus talks about Jacob with the woman at the well (John 4:12). He also mentions Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob being in heaven (Matthew 8:11). Paul talks about Jacob and Esau (Romans 9:13). And the writer of Hebrews mentions Jacob and Esau’s story as real events (See chapter 11:20-21, and again in 12:16). Jesus talked about Jacob as a real person. New Testament writers mentioned Jacob and Esau as real people and their story asreal events.
So, all these sources show that Jacob and Esau really were real people. Including ancient historians, archaeologists, Jesus Himself, and the New testament writers. But why does this matter? Well, if Jacob and his story are real and true, then again we see God’s promisesto him were real, and God kept those promises! Those promises lead to Jesus!
If God really does make and keep promises, that means you can trust Him to keep the promises He makes to you as well! The more we look at the Bible, the more we see that it really is true and dependable. And that means the God of the Bible is real and dependable too. You really can believe Him, and trust Him, today.
